Featured Project: Remixed Gifts
2015-2021"Remixed Gifts" spins a contemporary twist on gift-giving, with a nod to the cassette tape era and sub/pop culture. Based on the notion of a mixtape, shoppers can make their own “Gift Mix” using a custom-built WordPress plugin to select curated gifts from categories that reflect the unique personality of each lucky gift recipient.
Website Engineering
I built the website using WordPress and Woocommerce. Due to the complexities of my “Gift Mix” concept, I ended up working with a developer to help me create a custom Wordpress plugin to make it work, as the existing Woocommerce extensions were’t robust enough. I used the “Oxygen” theme by Laborator, making some custom tweaks so that it would suit my branding. (My plan was to eventually design my own theme, but creating and running a business by myself proved that you can’t always wear 100% of the hats, 100% of the time).

Social media marketing has been the ideal way to engage with new and existing customers since starting the business, especially for my target audience who are heavy Facebook and Instagram users. While I did utilize some paid advertising, I mainly relied on organic discovery and word of mouth.
Email marketing allows me to grow and maintain a list of customers who are “fans” of our brand and want to keep in touch. My click rates range from 2-8.3%, and views from 25-62%.
Advertising in small printed publications allowed me to reach my target audience, locally. I often designed ads and placed them in Birdy, Suspect Press, and others.
In order to demonstrate the “gift mix” concept, I had to stage my own product photo shoots, and fine-tune using Photoshop. Refining my approach to photos created for the website also helped me broaden my social media photography skills.
